First phase of Natomas levee project approved

The first phase of massive new levee improvements in Sacramento's Natomas Basin was approved Thursday despite objections from dozens of residents affected by the project.

The $400 million project will raise or widen nearly 25 miles of levees surrounding Natomas, a low-lying flood basin in north Sacramento that is home to more than 70,000 people. The project will take three years. The first phase in 2008 deals only with the Natomas Cross Canal and about 5 miles of the basin's northernmost Sacramento River levees.
