City traffic woes ahead: I-5 rehab to start in spring
Friday, 04 January 2008

ImageCaltrans will pay contractor bonuses for work finished ahead of schedule, hoping to shorten project's duration.

Highway officials are on track for a spring groundbreaking on what they say will be the biggest Sacramento freeway project in decades – rehab of decaying Interstate 5 in downtown Sacramento.

The two-year, $55 million project will involve digging up and replacing more than 1 1/2 miles of leaky roadbed on the busiest I-5 section north of Los Angeles.

Some 190,000 commuters, commercial truckers and other travelers vie daily for lane space between Richards Boulevard and the Highway 50 junction.
