Highway officials are on track for a spring groundbreaking on what they say will be the biggest Sacramento freeway project in decades – rehab of decaying Interstate 5 in downtown Sacramento. The two-year, $55 million project will involve digging up and replacing more than 1 1/2 miles of leaky roadbed on the busiest I-5 section north of Los Angeles. Some 190,000 commuters, commercial truckers and other travelers vie daily for lane space between Richards Boulevard and the Highway 50 junction. Source: Sacbee.com

Caltrans will pay contractor bonuses for work finished ahead of schedule, hoping to shorten project's duration.
